Beginner Macramé Wall Hanging: Four Knots and a Dowel
Macramé looks complicated and isn't. Ninety percent of the wall hangings you see online use just four knots. Learn them once and you can improvise any design you like — no pattern required.
What You'll Need
- 60 m of 4–5 mm natural cotton rope
- 1 × 60 cm wooden dowel
- Sharp scissors
- A crochet hook (for hiding ends)
- A curtain rod or hook to hang your work while you knot
The Four Knots
1. Lark's Head Knot
Fold a cord in half, place the loop under the dowel, pull the two tails through the loop, and tighten. This is how every hanging starts.
2. Square Knot
Take four cords. Cross the outer left over the two middle cords and under the outer right. Then cross the outer right under the middles and through the loop. Tighten. That's a half knot — mirror it for a full square knot.
3. Half Hitch
Used for diagonal lines and curves. Loop the working cord around the filler cord and pull through twice.
4. Clove Hitch
The horizontal version of a half hitch — perfect for creating bands across your design.
Building the Hanging
- Cut 24 cords at 2.5 m each. Yes, it feels like a lot — rope shrinks dramatically as you knot.
- Attach all 24 to the dowel with lark's head knots.
- Rows 1–3: square knots across, alternating the starting cord each row.
- Row 4: leave the outer four cords alone and create a V-shaped gap in the middle.
- Continue down until you've used about 60% of your rope length.
- Finish with a row of half hitches and trim the ends into a soft fringe.
Hanging and Styling
Use two small cup hooks or a single nail rated for at least 3 kg. Style it above a bed, a reading chair, or a gallery wall. Cream and natural tones work almost anywhere; for a boho look, add a dip-dyed ombré fringe.
