Chunky Knit Blanket: Your First Project Without Needles
No needles, no hooks, no prior experience. If you can make a loop and pull yarn through it, you can make this blanket. It's the most satisfying three hours you'll spend this month.
What You'll Need
- 6–7 skeins of super-bulky (size 7–8) chenille yarn
- A large flat surface — a floor or a big table
- Sharp scissors
Step 1: Cast On 12 Stitches
Measure out about 3 metres of yarn for your tail. Make a slip knot, then create a series of loops along your arm, each one about 20 cm long. Twelve stitches gives you a throw roughly 100 × 130 cm.
Step 2: Knit the Rows
- Working right to left, pull a loop of working yarn through each stitch and place it onto your left arm.
- At the end of the row, turn the work and repeat.
- Keep your tension even — loose loops make a floppy blanket, tight loops make it stiff.
- Continue for about 14 rows, or until the blanket is the length you want.
Step 3: Cast Off
Pull each loop through the one next to it, working across the row until one loop remains. Cut a long tail, thread it through the final loop, and pull tight. Weave the tail through the edge with your fingers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much yarn do I actually need?
For a 100 × 130 cm throw, budget 6–7 skeins of size 7 chenille. Buy one extra — running out mid-project is heartbreaking.
Can I use regular yarn?
Technically yes, but the effect won't be the same. The whole charm of arm knitting is the oversized, chunky texture.
